In Dixcove, a neighborhood in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region, a lecturer at the University of Ghana was the victim of robbery.
Serious injuries were suffered by two police officers who tried to apprehend the criminals.
Upper Dixcove assemblywoman Joana Koomson told Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning show host, Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, about the event and said the professor was there with a few students conducting research.
She continued by saying that on Valentine’s Day, the entire town was enveloped in darkness, and that as the professor and his pupils were outdoors, armed bandits attacked the hotel where they were staying.
“He is conducting research with his students in the community. On Valentine’s Day, while they were outside enjoying fresh air, they were attacked by robbers. The robbers broke through his window and entered his room, stealing his laptop, phones, GHC2,000, and other personal items. They also damaged other belongings in the room before fleeing,” she explained.
The Assemblywoman claimed that after informing the police, who dispatched officers right away, two officers, including a CID, were attacked with stones and clubs in an effort to apprehend the culprits, seriously injuring them.
“We notified the police, and they arrived promptly to apprehend the suspects. They have already arrested two individuals from Lower Dixcove, and the laptop has been recovered. However, approximately five others have fled the community,” she added.
She claims that fishing is the only significant commercial activity carried out by community members. But the majority of the unemployed have continued to be unemployed because of a lack of premix.
She thinks that the state of affairs is making a lot of the young males in the neighborhood rely on hard drugs and the creation of ghettos as a means of robbing innocent people.
You may remember that last year, a doctor assigned to the Dixcove government hospital had his home broken into.
Upper Dixcove’s traditional authority have voiced dissatisfaction with the rising number of robberies in the neighborhood and are pleading with the police to take immediate action to protect public safety.
They have issued a warning, saying that if this keeps up, it might even have an impact on the town’s tourism industry, as Fort Metal Cross draws hundreds of visitors every day.
