The widely discussed incident involving two hunters near Timtimhwe along the Tarkwa-Bogoso Highway in the Western Region has reached its conclusion.

In the final ruling, the Tarkwa Circuit court, under the guidance of Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu, decreed that Isaac Donkor, aged 55, would serve a 3-year prison sentence and pay a GH¢600 fine for the accidental shooting and subsequent death of Aziz Abukbil, aged 37, who was also a hunter.

Donkor faced charges of murder, negligent harm, and unauthorized possession of a firearm. He admitted guilt to all charges after voluntarily surrendering to the authorities following the tragic incident.

He explained that while hunting around 3pm, he mistook a small animal for a rat and shot it, only to realize it was a human upon closer inspection. Overwhelmed with shock and fear, he fled the scene and later turned himself in to the police.

Superintendent Juliana Essel-Dadzie, prosecuting the case, revealed that the victim’s brother, Osman Awuni, a farmer, reported Abukbil missing after he failed to return from a hunting trip in the outskirts of Timtimhwe.

Upon searching the area the following day, community members discovered Abukbil’s lifeless body with gunshot wounds. The authorities were notified, and an investigation led to Donkor confessing to the fatal shooting with his unregistered CBC single-barrel shotgun.

The court was informed that the police, upon receiving the report, conducted an examination of the body before transferring it to the morgue for further examination.
